Former world youth gold medallist Catherine Webombesa is one of the few female elite athletes that have registered for the inaugural Source of the Nile marathon due May 31 in Jinja, organisers said on Tuesday. “We are looking at bringing most of Uganda’s top runners on board. Some have confirmed while others need to consult their managers first before committing,” Muhammed Yusuf, the organising committee chairman, said while launching the marathon in Kampala.

Webombesa will compete in the longer 21km race that guarantees the winner a Shs1m cash prize. The winner of the 10km corporate race will also take home Shs1m but must donate it to charity. “The major aim of this marathon is to raise money to fight infant and maternal mortality in Eastern Uganda. But we have also found it necessary to put some incentives for top class competitors,” Hussein Kiyingi, the organising committee vice-chairman, revealed

Welcome to the inaugural Hared source of the nile marathon to be held in Jinja on the 31st May 2009. The marathon which will start at health first gym near the source of the river, will be run in two courses- The 10 kilometres and 21 kilometres circuit.The purpose of the marathon is to raise funds to fight infant and maternal mortality in Eastern Uganda.

The marathon is expected to be flagged off by the first lady of Uganda Mrs Janet Museveni and will also have the presence of other prominent people like the deputy Speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga.

Hared Oil is the main sponsor of the event and has already committed up to 30m, Bidco Uganda Limited has contributed sh6m and offered to meet the cost of prizes worth about sh24m. Eskom, Equity Bank, City Tyres, Toyota, Asiatic Sports, Wavah Water, Flavours Cafe, NSSF, Umeme, Jinja Municipal Council, Red Cross and Jinja Hospital have also pledged financial contributions and others in kind.

Yet others who have shown interest in helping out are: Nile Breweries, Pride Micro Finance, Blue Financial Services Salini Construttori, Nile Agro and the Indian Community have all shown interest in both participating and giving some financial boost.

Organisers of the marathon won’t accept beyond 5,000 entries and registration is already on at all Hared Petroleum Limited stations countrywide and one can also register on this website and make their payments at the nearest registration centre. Registration fee is Ushs 5000 for individual participants and 500,000 for corporate companies

The marathon, organised with an aim of raising funds to fight maternal and infant mortality in Eastern Uganda, will attract both elite and fun runners. With only one marathon on the local calendar, Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) are excited the Jinja event will give them an opportunity to unearth more talent in the countryside.
